Accessing the Public Library From Home

To continue feeding your reading habit during lock down and beyond, consider utilising digital access to your local  library. Many of us will be members of the Hastings District Library but others may be members at CHB library or elsewhere. If you are an existing member of the library, you will need to get the " OverDrive" App from the Appstore. This allows for eBooks and audiobooks to be downloaded to your device. Unfortunately those of you used to reading on a Kindle will have to adapt to either using a tablet or your smartphone as Kindle does not support the Overdrive app. You can sign in to the App using your library card number and PIN or (if you have forgotten the PIN) sign up with your email address and a password (which does not have to be an existing one).

That sets up your account and you then search for the library where you are a member. The app then allows you to borrow from the library through the 'Bookshelf' tab where you Add titles by searching through the titles shown. To avoid frustration from getting too many things that are not available, the wrong type or having to reserve books that are out, click the search box, then advanced search and filter to 'available now' and 'all ebooks format' before beginning your search. You can type titles or authors in the search box to find the books you want. The advanced search function also allows you to search by genre and audience (and a whole host of other functions) to assist you in searching for what you want. If you are looking for recommendations, I am available to help and you can email me at harrison.b.a@lindisfarne.hb.school.nz

If you are not currently a member of a library, you will need to join. The Hastings District Library has an online facility to join up, just click on the 'Join 'tab on their website and complete the online application form.
