Academic Assembly
Kia ora, boys and staff e noho please be seated. Welcome to Assembly. I’d like to invite Academic Prefect Harrison Quayle forward to deliver today’s reading.
Today’s reading comes from Philippians Chapter 3: Verses 12-16
Not that I have already obtained this, or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
This is the word of the Lord
(Thanks be to God)
Rectors Comments: Thank you, Harrsion. I invited Harrsion to deliver today’s reading as an academic prefect because today we celebrate our 2024 academic results. I know that you are all now starting the work towards your 2025 academic goals, but the end of year NCEA and NZ Scholarship examinations have produced some outstanding results and we must celebrate them.
It's the day when we hand out our academic ties to Year 12 students, Academic Colours to Year 13 students, NZ Scholarship badges , Rector’s citations and we acknowledge our Centurions. Before we do that, I want to congratulate all students on your fine academic results in 2024. Year 12 students, well done on your 95% pass rate for NCEA Level 1 last year. Year 13, congratulations on your 97% pass rate for NCEA Level 2.
I was speaking to Jaimil Ravla yesterday, our other Academic Prefect, and he and Harrison have got some big academic goals for you senior boys this year and they’re going to share them with you in the coming weeks. I think it’s awesome that the boys are thinking about academic goals and so please get behind them and let’s make 2025 the best ever year in the Academic Cornerstone.
Harrison read from Philippians Chapter 3 as follows: “But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize”. So we celebrate today, but then we push on to our 2025 goals.
Today reminds us of the important College value of Striving and Achieving.
Remember that it’s not about Striving to be the best. Although that’s great if some of you have that goal. There will be boys in here with their eyes on Dux, Top of Year or Top in Subject. It’s about striving to be your best. Judge yourself against your own potential. You will know if you’re working hard enough in class, doing enough study in study classes, doing enough homework, doing enough exam revision. You also know when you’ve put the hours of work in, and then been rewarded with a grade your satisfied with.
Today we also celebrate those young men in Year 13 who passed their NZ Scholarship examinations at the end of last year as Year 12 students. Scholarship is mainly targeted at Yr 13 students and is the hardest exam you can sit at high school level. It’s beyond NCEA Level 3. Incredibly, four of our current Year 13s who sat the exams a year early achieved Scholarship passes so well done to those boys.
So, I wish you all the very best with your 2025 goals. I ask for your courtesy and respect for the young men who come up one stage today. We have a large number of students to acknowledge, followed by a sports report later in the assembly.
Assistant Rector, Mrs Duncan, will now announce our Academic Scholars for 2025.
Academic Awards: Read by Mrs Duncan.

It’s my pleasure to deliver this week’s sports report.
In the St Paul’s Exchange Our tennis boys played extremely well and came away with an 8-4 win. In golf, a predominantly young team dominated the opposition, winning 7-1. Colts Cricket played 2 games of T20 on Sunday, and a 40-over on Monday. We won the T20 game, but lost the 40-over game narrowly. The 1st XI Cricket after a difficult start, won their three day game and claimed the Stu Duff trophy.
Could 1st XI captain Angus Scott please come forward to receive the trophy.
Congratulations to all the boys in this exchange. Thank you to the staff involved.

Congratulation to all those boys who were recognised today. I wish the pipe band all the best for tomorrow’s event in the auditorium and all of you who have sport and of course the rehearsals for Mamma Mia continue. There’s so much going on right now.
