Colours and 2/3rd placings Assembly – 29th October 2024
Good afternoon School. Please be seated.
I’d like to invite Chapel Prefect Ronan Brier forward to deliver today’s reading
Today’s reading comes from Colossians 3, Chapters 23-25
Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. Anyone who does wrong will be repaid for their wrongs, and there is no favouritism.
This is the word of the lord
(Thanks be to God)
Thank you, Ronan
Rectors Comments:
Today we present our Level 3 Academic Colours, along with our 2nd and 3rd placings in NCEA Courses at Levels 1 ,2 and 3. Academic colours recognise those boys who have achieved outstanding marks in the academic cornerstone.
Many of our Level 3 students have already achieved their qualification, often with Merit and Excellence and most have either achieved or are on track to achieve University Entrance. Lots of boys are sitting NZ Scholarships in a few weeks, the most challenging secondary school examinations in New Zealand. Today is a chance to recognise those young men who have excelled in the classroom.
As you know we have Senior Prizegiving on Thursday when we learn who has come top of each senior subject at NCEA Levels 1-3, along with the Dux and other top service and leadership awards. Achieving in the top 3 of your class is also highly significant and that’s why today’s assembly also recognises those boys who have come 2nd or 3rd in class this year. Some of these boys have missed out on the top award for their subject by just a fraction of a per cent, so they deserve public recognition too.
We’ve had a few events since you all left for the mid-term break last Thursday. We had our Sports Awards Dinner on Friday which was a huge success. Congratulations to the 1st XI Hockey Team for taking our team of the year and to special individual award winners:
Effort & Attitude in Sport - Clarke Sweet Cup: Jett Varcoe
Best Games Player - Todd Stembridge Cup: Tom Speers
Best All Rounder / Athlete - MacGregor Cup: Gordy Chatfield
And last night we had the Movie Premiere of Head Prefect Fergus Morunga’s movie: The Briefcase. The movie was a big hit and it was a lot of fun for all those involved and importantly all the money raised in ticket sales went to Starship Hospital and the HB Refuge.
I am going to keep my talk brief today boys because we have a lot of students to acknowledge. As I said last week at Colours assembly, please show your respect to all recipients. Every single person deserves the same level of courtesy and respect, whether he’s first up or last.
I’ll now hand over to Assistant Rector Mrs Duncan to read out today’s award winners.

Congratulation once again to all those boys who were recognised today.
Before we close I’d like to acknowledge some students who have made a huge contribution to all of our Assemblies and Chapels this year and as this is our last full school assembly before Senior Prizegiving it’s the only chance that our Yr 11-13 students have to show their appreciation to these students.
We’ve had the Chapel and Training Bands, the Pipe Band, Jazz and Symphonic Bands and the Worship Band supporting us, along with the amazing Tech Team. Could all those people stand up please? Applause.
Whilst many of you are within touching distance of the last formal day of classes for the year, the race is not yet run. Please continue to make good, responsible decisions as individuals and in groups. Continue to behave according to our values. Be kind and respectful and have the courage to say and do the right thing. Honour your teachers and your College by ending on the right note.
I’ll now invite Ronan to close our assembly in prayer
