Nau Mai Tena Koutou Katoa, please be seated.
I’d like to invite Head Prefect Tuawhio Porima forward to deliver today’s reading.
Today’s reading comes from Psalm 23
He pono e aru i ahau te pai me te atawhai i nga ra katoa e ora ai ahau, a ka noho ahau ki te whare o Ihowa ake tonu atu
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
This is the word of the Lord (thanks be to God)
Thank you, Tuawhio. Tuawhio delivered his reading in Te Reo Maori today and this acknowledges Te Wiki O Te Reo Maori – Maori Language Week. I want to congratulate all of you who make an effort with your Maori language. You’ll hear staff making an effort in the classroom and in our chapels and assemblies and so well done to all of you who make every week, Maori language week.
For the benefit of our senior students, I want to refer to the passing of the Queen in the UK last week. We acknowledged this in our junior assembly last week, but for the benefit of seniors you will note that we have lowered our national flag and that will remain lowered until after the Queen’s funeral on Monday UK time which will be our Monday night going into Tuesday morning. Queen Elizabeth was our head of state and she reigned for 70 years, so we acknowledge her passing in this way and by observing the public holiday a week on Monday.
Rectors Comments:
Today is a very special Sports Colours Assembly to recognise those students who have excelled in their winter codes. Achieving colours at Lindisfarne College is a great honour, and it acknowledges the huge commitment that these young men have made to their sports.
Colours not only recognises high achievement in each code. Certainly, each of the young men being presented with their Colours today is an elite athlete, but part of the requirement is that the student has also excelled in other areas. In training, by turning up on time, every time. He must also demonstrate a positive attitude towards practice and play.
I’ve enjoyed watching lots of you play your sports this year. We are not the largest school in the region, but we box well above our weight and achieve excellent results every year. So well done to all of you, whether you are receiving colours today or not. Many of those boys receiving colours would acknowledge that their individual success has been enhanced by the tough competition and support provided by their team mates.
It's also a chance to thank our coaches at the end of the winter season for the massive commitment they have made to you all. It’s one of the hallmarks of Lindisfarne College that all teachers take a sports team and I know you all appreciate the many hours that they have given to supporting you in your sports this year. And of course Mr Peterson and Miss Akeripa also spend countless hours organising and administering sport each and every day, so we must feel grateful to all our staff, for all they give in the sporting cornerstone. Please put your hands together for our staff.
Today marks the end of Week 8 and so we are getting close to the end of another term. Well done to all those boys who have been sitting benchmark exams over the past week. I hope they went well, and I hope they have also highlighted where there are gaps in your knowledge and skills as we move towards the final exams in November. With only 5 school weeks until the official NCEA exams it’s critical that you keep working hard to achieve your full potential in those final exams.
Today is a day of celebration for sporting colours and we can start that celebration by singing as one with genuine pride and passion. Junior have done a great job singing this week and so now it’s great to have the seniors back to raise the roof. Please join with me in singing the national anthem.
Rector Speaks
Before we move on to sporting matters, there is one cultural item that we must acknowledge today.
Last Friday Yr 12 student Leo Guo (Gooa) entered the Hawke’s Bay Young Musician of the Year Competition that took place at the Blyth Performing Arts Centre at Iona College. In the final, Leo competed against four other senior musicians from around the Hawke’s Bay who all delivered excellent performances. Leo performed three contrasting pieces on piano by Bach, Chopin, and Poulenc (Poolonk). The piece by Chopin is highly challenging for any professional pianist, let alone a high school student. Leo performed most of his items from memory and impressed the adjudicator’s to the extent that he was awarded 1st place and following on from Quinn Le Lievre in 2021, Leo is now the 2022 Hawke’s Bay Young Musician of the Year and the recipient of the Peter and Valerie Williams Cup. What makes this so special is that Leo was highly motivated to win this award after his third placing last year and has worked tirelessly over the past year to give himself the best possible chance. It’s a real credit to his sheer determination, skills and self-discipline. Could I please ask Leo to come forward to receive the Williams Cup!
The Hawke’s Bay Festival of Bands is on this Sunday in the Auditorium with several of our bands playing throughout the day if you can get along and…
The Performing Arts Concert is on next week Tuesday also in the Auditorium. If you’d like to go to the evening performance you are your parents can book tickets online or see Dr Kristensen

The College 1st XI Hockey team travelled to Auckland to compete in the Rankin Cup India Sheild Tournament. This tournament has the top 32 team in the country competing, it is a tough tournament with the boys playing 7 games of hockey throughout the week. The first four games were very tough coming up against large boys’ schools, the boys showed a tremendous amount of resilience as they picked themselves up from four losses in those four games. This meant that we needed to win the first two of our next three games to stay up in this tournament in 2023 and we won both. The last match pitted us against Taradale High School who we have not been beaten this year. The boys put in a fantastic effort to win 5-0 and finish the year on a real high.
Can the whole team come forward to receive their certificates.
