Sports Reports 01.07.22

Good afternoon I am pleased to be able to read today’s sports news. You will here are some results from two weeks ago seeing as there was no sport played of Matariki long weekend.

RUGBY

D Grade beat St John's Second XV 22-10 on Wednesday before Matariki with Henry Salter scoring two tries and the whole of the forward park defending wonderfully.

FOOTBALL

Our 1st XI had another great team performance with a 10-0 win over Taradale two Fridays ago. Two records set in two weeks saw Tom Speers complete a hattrick in 17 minutes before coming off before halftime. All round great team performance and another clean sheet.

Speers ended up scoring 4 goals, Oli Davies 3, Noah Schmith, Will foster and Yr 9 student Carter Lachmund all chipping in with one.

Our junior A had a challenging game two weeks ago.  They were down 3-1 but staged a comeback and managed to get ahead 4-3 but unfortunately with 3 minutes to go HBHS scored an equaliser to make it 4-4 final result. Boys showed great character to come back and not give up. Great attitude.

Lindisfarne B had a big win 11-1 win against St Johns on 18th June.  Arama Stuart scored 6 goals.

CANOE POLO

Two Saturday’s ago we had a draw against Puketapu and in the second game against Eskdale had a nice win 7-4. It was really good that a range of lads scored goals in this game. There was some good blocking in our 6m, and some nice movement of the ball up the pool on attack.

This Saturday is finals night, and we play Taradale.  Good luck to those players.

HOCKEY

The 3rd XI Hockey won 5 – 1 against NBHS Senior Scinde last week. Goal scorers were Tom Baines 2, Sam Devescovi 1, Corban Watson 1 and Tukotahi Tiakitai 1. Special mention to James Bradbury and Flynn Young for their best performance of the season and James Ericksen for creating some good attacking opportunities.

On Monday the 3rd XI won 3 – 0 against NBHS 5th XI. Goal scorers were Geordie Calder 1, Tukotahi Tiakitai 1 and Tom Porter 1. Special mention to Sam Devescovi and Nathan Campbell for good defensive work throughout the game.

SCOTS WINTER SPORTS EXCHANGE

On Tuesday 21 June we had our annual Scots Sports Exchange and had a great result winning the exchange 2-1.  We had Hockey, Football and Debating involved.

With Scots having a very young hockey side this year Lindisfarne agreed to play a combination team of 1st Xl and Colts hockey players to match more evenly with Scots. Looking at the positives of this it was a great opportunity to give some younger boys experience at the higher level. After a difficult first quarter getting use to the new combinations our team began to pierce through the defensive barrier of Scots and by half time were ahead 3 nil. The second half continued in similar fashion and the final score of 6 nil was a fair reflection of the game. Lindisfarne have dominated the hockey for the past 7 years so another great result for this team as they prepare for Rankin Cup next term.

In Football our first 1st Xl had a very exciting game.  Scots started the game aggressively and were quick to dominate scoring early. Our boys responded well with a well taken goal by Tom Speers curling it around the keeper from outside the box. Going into the half the scores were locked a 1 all. A fired up team with all players supporting each other saw us match it with Scots for the first 20 minutes of the second half. Then some individual brilliance from Ollie Davis resulted in a left footed strike past the opposition keeper and the lead 2-1. The final 15 minutes was a pulsating affair with both teams creating chances and our defence denying every opposition attack. Last time we defeated Scots was in 2018 so a special moment in football for the school.

In debating the debaters debated the moot "That this house would send combat troops to fight in the Ukraine." Lindisfarne affirmed the moot but misread the topic as a peacekeeping roll and therefore lost a debate in which many of the arguments overlapped.  Scots won by a reasonable margin and Daniel Diprose was the best of Lindisfarne's speakers.

Thank you and to everyone have a fantastic rest of your day and weekend.
