Assembly Notes 13.05.22

Today’s reading comes from the Book of Revelation, Chapter 7, Verses 16-17

They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat.

For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.

Rectors Comments:

Today we recognise two groups of students at the College. We acknowledge a number of students who have been achieving top results in the Academic Cornerstone and we announce our Summer Sport Colours recipients – those young men who have excelled in their chosen sports during Term 1.

Before we do that, I’d like us to take a moment to reflect on the importance of today’s assembly. Today is our first full school assembly of the year. It’s the first time we’ve been able to come together as a whole school to celebrate the achievements of our students in this formal setting. For the benefit of those students who are new in 2021, I want to explain a few of the traditions and expectations that we have at our formal assemblies.

You will notice that the staff have joined me on stage today. All staff are on stage to share in the acknowledgement of academic, cultural and sporting success that we recognise today. One of the special aspects of life at Lindisfarne is that we join together often as a whole school to celebrate our cornerstones. In Chapel, all staff attend with you because we are honouring the Christian dimension of the College alongside you, as we take the time to reflect on how we can live our best lives. Assemblies also include a Christian dimension as we begin with a bible reading and always end with a blessing from our Chaplain or Chapel prefect, but the main focus is on celebrating student achievement and service.

Prefects stand around the outside of to symbolise their leadership role in the school and to remind you, if necessary, of your responsibility to maintain a respectful and disciplined attitude throughout the assembly.

I am wearing my gown as a symbol of my respect for the academic cornerstone. I wear it so that you can be reminded of our core business to give our best in our academic work in order to live up to our absolute potential with respect to our learning.

I think it’s important that you understand some of the traditions of a Lindisfarne assembly and that you remember you all have a part to play, whether that be on stage as a recipient, a member of the Music ensemble or tech team. Or as a member of the audience where your role is to show the value of respect to all those who are speaking and being acknowledged.

I want to thank you for the positive start you’ve made to Term Two. There have been many examples already of students achieving in all the cornerstones. I want to take a moment to remind you of your responsibilities to show your teachers, coaches, tutors and managers how much you appreciate all they are doing for you. One of the expectations we have of our young men of character at Lindisfarne College is that you thank those people who are supporting you in all areas. It could be a sports practice or game, a music lesson, a production rehearsal, or an extra session of exam preparation at a lunchtime or afternoon. Lindisfarne College has a reputation for producing well mannered, courteous and humble young men who never lose sight of the importance of a simple thank you to someone who has helped them. We never want to lose that courtesy you all show and so remember your responsibility and the part you have to play.

On Wednesday this week I had the privilege of attending a function at the Grand Hall in Parliament to acknowledge New Zealand’s top secondary school students from 2021. Zac Maulder (Acc) and Jack Wilton (Agriculture and Horticulture) awards.

Junior Examinations starting next week. I trust you are working hard to prepare for these important assessments. You have a whole lot of support around you and I am aware of a number of teachers who are running lots of extra sessions to ….

Please ensure that you follow in the footsteps of Zac and Jack by setting high academic goals and using everything in your power to achieve your very best.

That leads nicely into our first set of awards for today and I’ll now call on Assistant Rector Mr Barry to announce our academic awards winners.

Rector speaks:

As many of you will know, Mr McAleese, who was in the role of Director of Sport left in Term 1 to take up a role with the New Zealand Women’s Hockey Team and HB Hockey. Our new Director of Sport is Mr Petersen, who has enjoyed a long association with Lindisfarne College and he has been highly involved in the sporting cornerstone both in his days as a student at the school and as a teacher. I’m delighted that he’s taken up the role and I’m sure he will do a superb supporting you all in your various sporting endeavours. Would you please join with me in congratulating Mr Petersen.

Summer Sports Colours are awarded to our athletes/sportsmen who have reached high levels of success either individually or in a team environment. The criteria for these awards is based on consistent levels of performance in the school premiere teams or in a sport where regional honours has led to national level competition. Those receiving these awards must always act as a role models to others and have an unselfish dedication and commitment to their sport and have been part of the leadership group in their sport alongside the coaching staff. It is one of the highest and prestigious awards that can be awarded while at school from the sporting cornerstone of the College.
