Quad Tournament 2021

From the 27th-30th of April, the 1st XV went down in Wellington for the annual quadrangular rugby tournament between Scots College, St Kentigern College, St Andrew’s College and Lindisfarne College which was hosted by Scots College. The boys got to meet and catch up with each other the weekend before Quad at Lindisfarne College for a training camp and were able to train and stay on campus together to prepare themselves physically and mentally for what was going to be a tough, challenging, and promising Quad tournament.

The training camp was a great opportunity for all of us to catch up with the rest of the team and prepare ourselves together for the tournament. We got to do lots of fun things as a team such as cooking, singing etc. We also got to learn our new 1st XV haka. The haka was introduced to the team by Mr. Sidney, as a way of feeling completely unique by having our own 1st XV haka and feel linked together as a team through this haka. The camp was also a great opportunity for the team to focus on what we had to do down in Wellington and what our goals were.

We faced Scots College as our first game of the tournament. The final score was 36-19 to Scots. It was a tough game and the boys battled hard but they were facing a bigger, stronger team. On Wednesday night, the team had the amazing and unique experience of going out for the Quad tournament’s dinner held at Parliament. They also got to listen to speeches delivered by old Scots 1st XV players such as Alex Fidow, Jackson Garden-Bachop, Peter Umaga-Jensen and TJ Va’a who are now playing rugby at a professional level for the Hurricanes. The boys then had a day off on Thursday to allow them to recover from the previous game and prepare themselves for the next one against St Andrew’s College. On Friday, the boys played their final game of the tournament against a tough and strong St Andrew’s College side. The final score was 8-33 but the boys fought until the end with courage and pride for the jersey and ended up scoring their only try of the game right at the end of the game. The boys went to the battle and fought for each other and most importantly, they never gave up.

The boys are truly humbled and grateful for being able to experience the amazing experience of playing in the Presbyterian Quadrangular rugby tournament 2021. The team would also like to thank the supporting families who came down there and supported us, the College Council, the staff members who also came down to support us, the sponsors Hatuma lime, Bayswater European and Landrover and especially Mr. Fritchley and Mr. Jones without whom it would not have been possible.
