7’s rugby/Preseason

This option is only available for boys in year 11-13.  The focus will be on rugby skills, fitness and 7 a side games.

Uniform: Black shorts red sports top or reversable training top


​​​​​​​Basketball 3's
There is no weekly competition for this but there will be a in house competition run.  Certain times there are one off local tournaments are available to enter.

​​​​​​​Cricket

The teams compete in the Hawke's Bay Cricket Association Club and Youth competition.  Depending on the level/age group of the competition will depend on the day the team plays.

​​​​​​​Uniform:  College white polo shirt, white cricket trousers, red College cap and white floppy hat.

Equipment:  Cricket gear.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​


Canoe Polo

Canoe polo is a sport available for all year levels. Boys new to the sport will be involved in trainings at school for them to gain confidence in paddling a kayak and to gain an understanding of the game. After being involved in trainings at school for approximately a term, the boys will then be able to play in the interschool competition  locally.

Training will take place in either the school pool or at the HB sports park.

HB Canoe Polo run an Autumn and Spring league available for our intermediate and secondary boys. The leagues run at either the HB  sports park or the Flaxmere pool.

Uniform: Short-sleeved top and shorts/togs. The rest of the gear is provided

Cross Country Running
Cross-country running is open to all potential runners from Year 7 to Year 13, with no prior experience necessary. Weekly training sessions for the entire team are held after school on Wednesdays and alternate between flat track and hill courses across Napier and Hastings.

Competition races include both individual and team events held across Hawke’s Bay, Gisborne, and Rotorua. Distances vary, ranging from short 2km sprint courses to longer endurance events such as the Triple Peaks and Tough Guy & Gal challenges.

There are opportunities for novice runners to begin their cross-country journey, as well as for more experienced runners seeking to improve their performance.

With in this sport you will do running training over different terrains & enter some adventure racing events e.g. tough guy challenge, triple peaks

Futsal

The teams compete in the Central football futsal competitions at juniors and seniors level, competitions are played Friday afternoons or evenings. 

The school enters a junior and senior team in the HBSS competition and the top senior team goes to either the Futsal Nationals or the Northern Cup during summer tournament week. 

Uniform: depends on team selected for - but nothing extra in terms of uniform is required 

Equipment: Shin pads and futsal shoes/sneakers


Kayaking

This is open to all year levels from 9-13 from beginner to advanced.  Trainings take part on land and on the Clive river.

You will learn paddling techniques and have the opportunity to compete in events.​​​​​​​


​​​​​​​Mountain Biking

Mountain biking is an exhilarating sport for the boys who are passionate about riding. It is for both competitive and non competitive riders and includes all age groups in the College. The teams participate in the New Zealand Secondary Schools competition but not all riders choose to compete. Training will either be at Te Mata Peak of Eskdale or Gum Tree.

Uniform: Lindisfarne Mountain Bike top.

Limited numbers - only available to students with a minimum of two years experience and own their own bike. Parents will need to sign a waiver​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

​​​​​​​​​​​​Sailing

Teams will travel over to the Napier Sailing club for training.  There s the opportunity to enter in the Spring Regatta, Lower NISS, NZSS Regattas.

Uniform:  Red College spray vest, red polo shirt and red shorts. Equipment:  All-weather sailing gear.

Swimming Fitness

This is a new option and is for boys that can already swim and want to develop better fitness.

Trainings for this will take place during lunch times.

Summer Hockey

Our Summer Indoor Hockey Development Program is designed to help players sharpen their skills, enhance their game understanding, and stay active during the off-season. Using the fast-paced indoor hockey format, this program focuses on technical and tactical skill development in a fun, competitive, and supportive environment. Indoor hockey is a dynamic game that demands quick reflexes, precise ball control, and intelligent decision-making. The smaller playing area and faster pace encourage players to develop essential skills.​​​​​​​

Rowing

Training days and times will depend on prior experience. Those new to rowing will have two trainings per week (one on the Clive river and one at school) and another river training session on Saturdays. Experienced rowers will follow a programme set out by the Hawke’s Bay Rowing Club and will compete in Club and Secondary Schools Regattas.

Tennis

Juniors play in the Hawke's Bay Schools competition.  The Seniors play in the school and interschools championships.

For Senior and Junior competitive players before school trainings are offered with an outside coach.

Uniform:  White with red College polo shirt, white and red tennis shorts, white socks, red cap (optional).

Equipment:  Racket, tennis shoes.

Touch Rugby

The teams participate in the Hawke's Bay Secondary Schools competition down at the Mitre 10 sports park.  There are competitive and social teams.

Uniform:  College touch top, black rugby shorts, touch shoes.​​​​​​​

Volleyball

Games are played on a Tuesday night at the Rodney Green Arenas, Gloucester St Taradale Napier from 4pm-9pm​​​​​​​

This weekly competition caters for the competitive through to social teams with finals been held in the last week of the competition

Uniform:  Red College polo shirt, red shorts, white socks.

Equipment:  Court shoes, knee pads.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

Waka Ama (limited numbers)
This is a new option for 2025.  The aim is to take a 6 person team to nationals.​​​​​​​

Water Polo

​​​​​​​Hawkes Bay Water Polo will now be running Secondary School Water Polo on a Sunday afternoon/evening

There will now be separate Y9-10 and Y11-13 divisions (in 2024 it was Y9-13 all in one division)

Y11-13 runs Term 1 only (with optional training provided in Term 4) whilst Y9-10 runs T1 and T4.

Intermediate Water Polo will be in Terms 2-3 only and will remain on a Thursday evening (Kirk- for your insight)
