INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
International Student Director
Our international students add significant value to the social fabric of our College community by bringing different cultures and values into our everyday College life. Currently we have students from Thailand, China, Japan, Samoa, Fiji, New Caledonia, Germany and Futuna.
We offer international students a comprehensive and encompassing education; many of them go on to seek tertiary education in New Zealand. All our international students board within the College campus and homestays are arranged for all public and school holidays.

English Language Tuition
International students, whose first language is not English receive up to three hours a week of English language tuition. Their English language skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing, their vocabulary level and grammar knowledge are assessed, and an individual programme is developed for them. Other subject support is given as required, where there are language difficulties. It is important for students to have an understanding of New Zealand culture, as language and culture are inseparable, and for this reason, current New Zealand news and events are given a strong focus.
Accommodation
International students are accommodated in the boarding hostel on site where all boarders live. Homestay accommodation is arranged for students on exeat weekends and for school holidays as required, enabling International students to mix with New Zealand families. The opportunity of staying in a hostel in a totally English-speaking environment results in an exponential improvement in the student’s own English language development .
Lindisfarne College has agreed to observe and be bound by the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students published by the New Zealand Ministry of Education. Copies of the Code are available from Lindisfarne College or from the New Zealand Ministry of Education website at www.minedu.govt.nz
Student Welfare
An orientation programme is provided for new students, and weekly support meetings with the International Student Director are held to assist students in settling into the College. Students also have access to all the support networks within the school. Reports on student progress are sent regularly to parents, and school newsletters are available on this website.
Our International Student Director assists students with travel arrangements, visa requirements and compulsory medical and travel insurance.
Boarding is like living in a very large family; you get to know everyone that you live with, both New Zealanders and other internationals.
Maika Nasilasila joined Lindisfarne 3 years ago on a rugby scholarship from Fiji, since which time he has been ever-present in the 1stXV. He returns home twice a year and is gently teased about how he is becoming a Kiwi!
As the Prefect of International Students, Maika keeps an eye on the 22 other international students at Lindisfarne. They come to him as a source of help and advice and if, as he himself was at first, they are homesick.
Maika has ambitions on the rugby field, but if that doesn’t work out, he’s considering a Commerce degree.
He has loved his time in New Zealand, where it’s not so hot, and at Lindisfarne, where the food (especially the steaks) is much better. And, he says, it’s become a home away from home, a place where he has made many great friends.
