Students and Old Boys of the College clashed in the Annual Summer exchange on Sunday February 8th.
In the Cricket, a very strong Old Boys' team, featuring recent leavers and Hawke's Bay Under 19 Reps, Jacob Smith (86) and Richard Dobson (39), were ably assisted by Kurt McRedmond (29), Scott Pearson (28), Aidan MacMillan (27), reached a highly competitive total of 258 runs after 40 overs. Angus Schaw was the pick of the College's 1st XI bowlers taking 5 for 22. In an exciting chase, the College 1st XI passed the Old Boys' total for the loss of just five wickets. Key contributors were Scott Schaw (83), Ben Wallace (52), with William Dykes (37 n.o.), and Angus Schaw (23 n.o.) at the crease when the winning runs were scored. Jacob Smith took two wickets and current Intermediate teacher Mr. Milarn Smith and Old Boy Charlie Crasborn one a piece.
In the Tennis fixture, Lindisfarne's top six players were matched against a strong Old Boys' team but narrowly prevailed 5-4, providing much needed tough opening encounter for the new season. In 'Melbourne-like' weather conditions, it was decided to restrict the matches to one tie breaker set each, a decision which immediately paid off as the number one doubles combination could not be separated until Ironside and McIldowie finally closed out their match at 11-9 in the tie break over Sam Barns-Graham and Andrew Harrison.
James Francis and Scott Fortune proved to be too consistent for Jock Barns-Graham and Koal Berkahn Greer winning their singles and doubles pairing for the Old Boys, while Michael Owen and Ben Wynne Lewis overcame John Penny and our 2008 number 1, James Holden. Andrew Harrison went onto beat Finn McIldowie which meant that the scores were level going into the final match, the No. 1 singles of Calum Ironside versus Sam Barns Graham. Calum showed good patience to win against a hard hitting Barns-Graham 6-3 and thus win the competition for Lindisfarne.
Thanks to Rob Hay for organising the day.
