International Students

  • Lindisfarne College offers a unique experience for International students. They are fascinated by its traditions and culture. The College International Student Programme has been in operation for 14 years, and in that period the school has developed successful structures and student support networks to meet the individual needs of students from many countries. Students should emerge from the experience of attending Lindisfarne College with reputable New Zealand qualifications (dependent upon the length of time spent at the school), and enhanced personal development.

Lindisfarne College, in the New Zealand National Certificate in Educational Achievement, is regularly the top performing school on the East Coast of the North Island, is ranked as one of the top four boys’ schools nationally, and is recognised as one of the leading academic schools in the country.

The school size (485 boys) provides a personalised education for its students. Classes are small, averaging 18 students, allowing for more individual attention from subject teachers. The college believes in providing an holistic education for its boys, and the cultural, sporting and outdoor educational opportunities are some of the best in New Zealand.

The college’s musical groups regularly win awards at both regional and national competitions, while many of the sports’ teams are coached by staff who have achieved personal representative honours themselves.

  • Entry criteria

Lindisfarne College requires students to have at least an Intermediate Level standard of English language on application, as students are integrated into mainstream classes and are required to further their academic studies in a variety of subject areas. On application, student reports for the previous two years of schooling are required. You will need to supply English translations of these. Successful applicants will be students who are motivated to learn, who work hard, and have a good attitude to learning.

  • English language tuition

International students, whose first language is not English, receive up to three hours a week of English language tuition. Their English language skills in speaking, listening, reading, writing, their vocabulary level, and grammar knowledge are assessed, and an individual programme is developed for them. Other subject support is given as required, where there are language difficulties. It is important for students to have an understanding of New Zealand culture, as language and culture are inseparable, and for this reason, current New Zealand news and events are given a strong focus.
  • Accommodation

International students are accommodated in the boarding hostel on site where 200 boarders live. Home stay accommodation is arranged for students on exeat weekends and for school holidays as required, enabling International students to have opportunities of mixing with New Zealand families. The opportunity of staying in a hostel in a totally English speaking environment, results in an exponential improvement in the student’s own English language development.
  • Student welfare

An orientation programme is provided for new students, and weekly support meetings with the International Student Pastoral Care Coordinator are held to assist students in settling into the College. Students also have access to all the support networks within the school. Reports on student progress are sent regularly to parents, and school newsletters are available on this website. Our International Student Pastoral Care Coordinator assists students with travel arrangements, visa requirements and compulsory medical and travel insurance.

Lindisfarne College has agreed to observe and be bound by the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students published by the New Zealand Ministry of Education. Copies of the code are available from Lindisfarne College or from the New Zealand Ministry of Education website at: www.minedu.govt.nz.

  • Health and travel insurance

Most students are not entitled to publicly funded health services while in New Zealand unless they are:

    • A resident or citizen of Australia; or
    • A national of the United Kingdom in New Zealand; or
    • The holder of a temporary permit that is valid for two years or more.

If you do not belong to one of these special categories and you receive medical treatment during your visit, you will be liable for the full costs of that treatment. Therefore it is compulsory that you have insurance that will cover the cost of medical treatment in New Zealand for the duration of your stay in New Zealand. We strongly recommend that you obtain insurance to cover your travel to and from New Zealand.
